Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a study (Sasol 2000) investigating the hygroscopic properties of aluminium tri-isopropanolate, the substance reacts instantaniously with water forming almost quantitatively isopropanol and aluminium 3+ species while a pH of 8.5 is established (concentration 1 mol/L).

Additional information

Aluminium triisopropylate is hygroscopic and hydrolyses immediately and quantitatively in contact with water to form isopropanol and aluminium hydroxide which might further convert to boehmite (Al(OH)O). The resulting pH when dissolving 0.1 mol / L (20.4 g/L) water as shown in the hydrolysis test is pH 8.5. Thus, environmental fate, ecotoxicological and toxicological properties cannot be appropriately assessed with the substance as is but have to be assessed based on the properties of the hydrolysis products isopropanol and aluminium hydroxide / boehmite.
