Parameter:
thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: diameter of the orifice plate
Remarks on result:
not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement
Parameter:
sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J
Parameter:
sensitiveness to friction: friction load (N)
Remarks on result:

Friction test

Six negative assays were recorded: No friction sensitivity was noted with the test item with a loading of 360 Newtons. No further tests were performed.

Mechanical sensitivity (shock)

Six negative assays were recorded: No shock sensitivity was noted with the 40-J force.

No further tests were performed.

Heat sensitivity (flame)

Three assays using a tube with a hole of 6-mm diameter: between approx 2 and 2.5 min, the test item overflowed, projections and sparks were observed. Between approx 3 and 4.5 min, smokes (2 assays) or a yellow flame of about 25-cm height (1 assay) was observed. Three assays using a tube with a hole of 2-mm diameter: between approx 2 and 3 min, the test item overflowed, projections and sparks were observed. Between approx 3 and 4 min, projections were observed. From approx 4 min to 4.5 min, smokes were observed (2 assays). In conclusion: six negative assays were recorded: No heat sensitivity was noted with the test item.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Neodymium trinitrate was concluded not to be explosive when exposed to friction, shock or heat.

Description of key information

Neodymium trinitrate is concluded not to be explosive.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

An experimental study performed under GLP compliance and in accordance with EU A.14 method was flagged as a key study and assigned a Klimisch score of 1. It revealed that neodymium trinitrate is not sensitive to friction, shock or heat.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Neodymium trinitrate was tested not to have explosive properties and needs thus not to be classified for this endpoint according to CLP criteria.
