Guidance on Safe Use

First-aid measures

Avoid contact with eyes and skin.

GENERAL DETAILS

INHALATION

Remove patient from the contaminated area and lead to fresh air(O). If breathing is difficult, have qualified personnel administer oxygen. If the patient is not breathing, have qualified personnel perform artificial respiration (O). If the patient is unconscious perform assisted respiration (AMBU ball or oxygen therapy). If symptoms persist, provide hospitalisation under observation. Do not administer adrenaline. PROVIDE MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY.

CONTACT WITH EYES

In case of contact with eyes, wash IMMEDIATELY and abundantly with running water, with eyelid open, for 10 – 15 minutes. If irritation persists, contact an eye doctor.

CONTACT WITH SKIN

In case of contact with skin, wash contaminated parts with soap and water. Rinse with water and remove contaminated clothing. (O)If irritation phenomena appear, provide medical attention.

INGESTION

DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING, the PREPARATION IS NOT SOLUBLE. DO NOT administer drinks. If the patient is conscious, administer as a dilutant 200ml (adult), 50ml (children) a suspension of activated carbon in water (10g/100ml). Induce vomiting. If the patient is unconscious or is experiencing convulsions, do not administer anything by mouth, do not induce vomiting, and keep the patient warm while awaiting medical assistance. (O)If the patient vomits spontaneously, prevent suffocation by placing the patient’s head between the knees: PROVIDE MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. Medical personnel will be able to perform a gastric lavage only after having preventively aspirated and freed the airways.

Recommendations for fire-fighting personnel

Remove all people not essential to the task at hand. Allow only well trained persons who are informed on the product’s hazards to intervene. Intervene wearing a self contained breathing apparatus. In case of intervention in close proximity, wear anti-acid overalls providing total protection. Remove all sources of ignition

Vapours are heavier than air and tend to deposit at ground level. If fanned, flames can cover a vast area. When fire is put out with water, pay attention to burns from vapours

If possible, remove recipients exposed to heat, otherwise cool them down with abundant water.

Remove non-trained personnel not involved in operations from all sources of ignition. Use anti-spark equipment for operations.

Environmental precautions

Avoid spilling. collect the product and clean-up equipment used in containers and store in a confined area. Mechanically insert the product into sealable and labelled containers.

In case of significant spillage, the area must be evacuated.

Containment and clean-up methods and materials

Collect with sawdust, sand or inert absorbent material (bentonite). Collect into labelled drums. Prevent and remove all sources of ignition, and provide suitable aeration. During handling, use necessary PPE

Handling and storage

Precautionary measures for safe handling

Avoid contact or inhalation of vapours. Use protective clothing. Use a face mask with an ABEK filter for organic substances in presence of vapours. If acid for HF is highly corrosive. Use anti-spark equipment.

Conditions for safe storage, including incompatibilities

Lacquered iron drums, steel containers. Store in original containers, hermetically closed and sealed

Provide waterproof, anti-corrosion electrical systems. Inform personnel of the product’s hazards. Install emergency showers in the vicinity of storage areas. Handle containers wearing anti-acid overalls and boots, gloves, a helmet and visor. Lorries must be loaded wearing a visor, helmet and gloves. Do not keep the product in sections of tubing and/or circuits demarcated between two closed valves or in recipients not equipped with safety air vents. Wash hands carefully after use.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure controls

Aerate work areas. If a risk of emissions exists, provide suitable air ventilation for the area.

Respiratory protection

Mask with filter for organic substances. Use an ABEK combined filter if the product forms vapours.

Protection for hands:

Neoprene gloves or in vinyl materials (PVC).

PVA (polyvinylacetate) gloves or in nitrilic rubber

Eyewear for chemical risks with seal/facial screen, in case of risk of splashing.

Protection for skin:

Wear protective overalls. Work clothes must provide complete cover. Overalls/boots in neoprene or vinyl materials if the risk of splashing exists.

Incompatible materials

No special reactions are developed if used correctly. Reacts violently with light materials (Na, K, etc.). Reacts violently with sulphonitrate mixture (sulphuric acid plus nitric acid). Incompatible with highly oxidant substances, such as permanganates, dychromates, strong acids, halogens and their mixtures.

Hazardous decomposition products if stored and handled correctly no hazardous decomposition products are produced. CO, CO2, HF HCl and other toxic

gases are formed in case of fire.

Waste processing procedures

Avoid spilling, and dispose of in a chemical incinerator equipped with a post-combustion chamber and scrubber.

Treatment of packaging/containers

Wash all packaging abundantly with hot water, avoiding inhalations, treat effluents as waste. Clean empty packaging can be reused, recycled or eliminated in accordance with local/national directives in force.
