Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets
Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Emergency measure - Inhalation: If inhaled remove person to fresh air. If not breathing,
give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. Call a physician.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes. Call a physician.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing. The
compound is not a skin irritant.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: In its end use application, this is an unlikely route of
exposure. However, if it occurs signficant adverse health
effects are unlikely to result. The compound has low oral
toxicity (LD50 = 2171 mg/kg body weight). In the case of
accidental ingestion do not induce vomiting. Call a
physician.
Fire-fighting measures
Recommended extinguishing agent: None. Product will not burn.
Product arising from burning: None. Product will not pyrolyse.
Product determined by test: N
Protective equipment: Usual protective equipment sufficient.
Accidental release measures
Emergency measures in case of spillage: As described in section C, the very secure packaging
conditions will minimize the chances of a spill during a
transportation incident. However, if such spillage occurs
the spilled catalyst will be swept up, placed in suitable
containers and returned to a recycler for recycling into
fresh catalyst. Any residual amount left on the ground
(which will be miniscule because of the high cost of the
catalyst) will not harm humans or the environment because it
is essentially a non-toxic inorganic compound.
Handling and storage
Handling: Workers handling the chemical will be required to wear full
clothing, impervious gloves and eye protection (sideshield
safety glasses or chemical splash-proof goggles).
Engineering controls and good industrial hygiene practice
will be enforced to prevent respiratory exposure. However,
if dusty conditions prevail workers will be required to wear
appropriate respirators.
Storage: The compound will be stored in closed flexible intermediate
bulk containers (FIBCS or bulk bags). These containers will
be stored in secondary and tertiary containers at ambient
temperature. Packages will remain sealed during storage and
will be protected from exposure to humidity which can
degrade the catalytic properties of the product, resulting
in reduced catalytic efficiency. The expected duration of
storage will be less than 1 year. Storage under these
conditions will mitigate worker and environmental exposure
potential.
Packaging of the substance and or preparation: VPO(PSA) Catalyst will be packaged in lined flexible
intermediate bulk containers (FIBCS or bulk bags) which are
subsequently packaged in secondary and tertiary containers
for transport and storage. The FIBCS are made of
polypropylene woven fabric with an internal plastic lining.
The weight of product in each FIBC is expected to be 1 tonne
(maximum). The FIBCS will be individually contained within
external plastic liners. Each plastic covered FIBC will then
be placed inside a cardboard box. These boxes will be
secured by plastic straps to pallets which will be
subsequently plastic shrink-wrapped and then placed within
metal export containers.

Stability and reactivity
Danger other than fire: Not applicable.
Chemical reaction with water: Will not react violently with water.
Dust explosion: Non-explosive.
Dust explosion determined by test: N
Disposal considerations
Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: All spent catalyst will be returned for recycling to produce
fresh catalyst precursor. Accidentaly spilled catalyst will
be similarly gathered up and recycled.
Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Aqueous slurries of VPO Catalyst or the Preparation VPO(PSA)
Catalyst can be neutralized with sodium carbonate. However,
VPO Catalyst is not acutely toxic. Due to its high cost all
spent catalyst or off-specification or spilled catalyst will
be recovered and recycled rather than disposed of.
Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not applicable. Waste (spent catalyst) will be recycled.
Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Not applicable. Will not burn.
Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Waste or spilled catalyst will be recovered and will not be
discharged into sewerage systems for disposal. However, if
contamination occurs, the system should be neutralized and
then filtered.
