The substance is a hydrocarbon UVCB and is a colourless odourless viscous liquid. The substance demonstrated a pour point at - 39 °C, and a boiling point at 398°C with a range of > 216 — 686 °C . The density of the substance is 0.82 g/cm3 at 15 - 25°C. The substance demonstrated a dry vapour pressure of 1.22 kPa at 37.8 deg C. Standard tests for partition coefficient are intended for single substances and are not appropriate for this complex substance. An attempt was made nonetheless, to which unforeseen technical and analytical difficulties were encountered which resulted in a estimated Log Pow of >5.31.Using the US EPA On-Line EPI Suite™ KOWWIN version 1.68 model, the log Kow range is predicted to be 7.49 to 31.33.

As a hydrocarbon UVCB, standard tests for water solubility are again not appropriate for this complex substance. Using the US EPA On-Line EPI Suite™ WSKOW v1.42 model, the water solubility range is predicted to be 2.64E-27 to 0.004421 mg/l. This indicates that the substance is insoluble, with water solubilities much lower than 0.1 mg/l. A standard OECD test using GCFID was conducted on the substance which coincides with the US EPA On-Line EPI Suite™ results determining the solubility of the substance to be <0.1 mg/l.

The Flash Point of the substance was determined to be 226 °C. The Fire Point of the substance was determined to be 250 °C. The reaction threshold temperature 215°C with a hot flame ignition temperature of 374°C at 751 mm Hg. The substance is not considered to be highly flammable or flammable. There are no explosivity, oxidising or flammability hazards associated with the substance based on the structure and known properties as a white oil.

Commercially available white oils are quantified based on their physico-chemical properties; namely boiling point and associated viscosity. The unique viscosity grades or different commercial products each contain all the same typical chemical structures and predominantly overlapping molecular Weight distributions, a result of the short-path distillation (wiped film evaporation). 

Reliability

The above studies have been ranked reliability 1-2 according to the Klimish et al system. This ranking was deemed appropriate because the studies were not all conducted to GLP, but are in compliance with recognised guidelines.

Justification for classification or non classification

Commercially available white oils are quantified based on their physico-chemical properties; namely boiling point and associated viscosity. Due to the viscosity of the different grades, dual classification is applied as follows:

Grades 3cSt and 4cSt are of a viscosity that triggers classification as:

Asp. Tox. 1; H304: May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways

under the CLP Regulation. European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures.

Grades 7cSt to 16cSt are of a viscosity that does not trigger classification as an aspiration hazard under the CLP Regulation. European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures.
