Description of key information

The growth inhibition on the freshwater algae Desmodesmus subspicatus was tested by Dengler, D. (2009) in a 72-h test (under static conditions in accordance with EU Method C3). The test was performed according to OECD 201 (2006) guideline. 6 concentrations (between 0.041 and 10 mg/L, serial dilution factor: 3) (3 replicates each) plus controls (6 replicates ) were tested. The NOEC was determined as 0.37 mg/L, the EC50 (based on growth rate) was 1.69 mg/L, the EC50 (based on yield) was 0.85 mg/L, and the EC50 (based on biomass integral) was 0.99 mg/L. Significant effects were detected from 1.11 to 10 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
1.69 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.37 mg/L

Additional information

The study (with use of EU Method C.3, Algal Inhibition test) was conducted according to OECD 201 (2006) guideline and meets scientifically accepted principles.

The results are summarised in the following table:

Method Endpoint (exposure duration) Exposure concentration  Reference
EU Method C.3 (Algal Inhibition test)    ErC50(72 h) 1.69 mg/L  Dengler, D. (2009)
EU Method C.3 (Algal Inhibition test)    EyC50(72 h) 0.85 mg/L  Dengler, D. (2009)
EU Method C.3 (Algal Inhibition test)    EbC50(72 h) 0.99 mg/L  Dengler, D. (2009)
EU Method C.3 (Algal Inhibition test)    NOEC (72 h) 0.37 mg/L  Dengler, D. (2009)
