Description of key information

In a reliable guideline study on C12-14 ADMAES in freshwater invertebrates (Daphnia magna), the 48 hour EC50 and NOEC were 0.036 mg a.i./L and 0.023 mg a.i./L, respectively (Kean M et al., 2012).

A guideline study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of C12-14 ADMAES (96% active ingredient) to Daphnia magna. Daphnia magna (4 replicates of 5 animals/dose) were exposed to nominal concentrations (0, 0.006, 0.014, 0.03, 0.07 and 0.15 mg a.i./L) of the test substance in the medium for 48 hours under semi-static test conditions at 21°C. Immobilisation was recorded after 24 and 48 hours. Potassium dichromate was used as positive control. Chemical analysis of the test substance in the test medium was performed. The measurement of the test concentrations over a 24-hour period showed a good level of stability for C12 but less so for C14, to which exposure was reduced, likely due to binding of C14 to the glass of the test vessels. Exposure was therefore calculated as geometric measured mean concentrations corrected for the percentage composition of the active components. Under the study conditions, the EC50 of test substance for Daphnia magna was 0.036 mg a.i./L. The NOEC for effect on daphnia mobility was determined to be 0.023 mg a.i./L (Kean M et al., 2012).
