The stability of the registered substance was assessed in water at three pH levels. A 30-day trial was conducted in pH 4, 7 and 9 buffer solutions at temperatures of 15 and 25°C. DBS was determined to be hydrolytically stable at 15°C when monitoring DBS with the monobromostyrene constituent at pH 4, 7 and 9. Based on the dibromostyrene constituent, DBS was determined to be hydrolytically stable at pH 4 and 9, but was marginally hydrolytically unstable at pH 9 (t½ = 177 days). Based on the tribromostyrene constituent, DBS was determined to be hydrolytically stable at pH 7, but was unstable at pH 4 (t1/2 = 46 days) and pH 9 (t½ = 149 days). At 25°C, DBS degraded at all pH levels. Half-lives based on monobromo-, dibromo- and tribromostyrene ranged from 39-43, 50-59, and 37-49 days, respectively. Half-lives based on pH ranged from 37-50 (pH 4), 39-59 (pH 7) and 40-52 (pH 9) days. Based upon the range and reliability of available information no further studies were considered to be necessary. The stability of the monomeric form of the registered substance is not paramount as it is neither manufactured nor imported into the EU in its monomeric form, and is only available to industry in it's polymerised form. In view of this exposure information it is proposed that the stability of the polymer, in which the registered substance is present, mediates the exposure of the substance to the environment.
