Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance is acutely toxic to aquatic organisms.

Additional information

Short-term toxicity to fish: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish.

Key study: BASF AG (1988, report no. 10F0587/875275). DIN 38412-15, Leuciscus idus:

- 96-h LC50 = 68 mg/L (nom.), without pH-adjustment

- 96-h LC50 > 100 mg/L (nom.), with pH-adjustment

The observed mortality is most likely due to the pH shift in the test solutions caused by the substance, but not due to an inherent toxic effect of the substance.

Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates: Acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

Key study: 48-h EC50 = 78.5 mg/L (estimated, QSAR Toolbox v4.4, BASF SE, 2020)

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates: Based on GHS, no chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is anticipated

Key study: BASF SE (2020, report no. 51E0154/18E038)  EC10 (21 d): 4.33 mg/L (nom., analytically verified; Daphnia magna, OECD 211, semi-static)

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria: Acutely toxic to aquatic algae.

Key study: BASF SE (2019, report no. 60E0154/18059): OECD 201, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata:

72-h ErC50 = 1.56 mg/L (nom., analytically verified)

72-h ErC10 = 0.29 mg/L (nom., analytically verified)

Toxicity to aquatic microorganisms: The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Key study: hydroxyethylpiperidine (CAS 3040 -44 -6): short-term respiration inhibition study according to OECD 209, municipal activated sludge (GLP; BASF, 2018, 08G0154/18G236):

180 -min EC10 = 73 mg/L (nom.), EC20/EC50 > 1000 mg/L (nom.)

Supp. study: hydroxyethylpiperidine (CAS 3040 -44 -6): short-term respiration inhibition study according to ISO 8192, industrial activated sludge (non-GLP; BASF AG (10 Oct 1985): 30-min EC20 > 100 mg/L (nom.)

Conclusion: 2-Piperidinoethanol (CAS 3040-44-6) is considered to be acutely toxic to aquatic organisms.
