Description of key information

The solubility of the xylene isomers and ethylbenzene in water range from 146 to 190.7 mg/L at 25°C. The solubility of m-xylene is 146 mg/L, o-xylene is 170.5 mg/L, the solubility of p-xylene is 156 mg/L and the solubility of ethylbenzene is 190.7 mg/L. The mean value of 165.8 mg/L will be used for the risk assessment.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
165.8 mg/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Yalkowsky and He (2003) is a peer reviewed handbook and so can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. The data are supported by results from the CRC Handbook (Lide 2008), which gives water solubilities for m-xylene, o-xylene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene of 161 mg/L, 171 mg/L, 181 mg/L and 161 mg/L at 25°C respectively.
