Approximately 100g of sample was heated in a beaker with the heat source provided from a hot plate. The sample was agitated constantly using a magnetic stirrer and a thermometer was used to measure the temperature of the test substance. The sample was heated through a range of 50 °C to 260°C at a heating rate of approximately 5 °C/min, with the temperature of the condensate monitored throughout.

At 180 °C the sample was observed to ‘smoke’ and darken in colour. No signs of boiling were seen in the sample. The test was terminated at 263 °C due to limitations of the equipment.

The sample was not observed to ignite during the test, therefore it can be concluded that the autoflammability temperature of zinc neodecanoate, basic is greater than 263 °C.

Conclusions:
Zinc neodecanoate, basic does not boil in the temperature range 50 to 263 °C, however decomposition of the material occurs at 180 °C. It can therefore be concluded that zinc neodecanoate, basic decomposes before the boiling point is reached.
