Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The biodegradation of the substance was tested in a modified MITI test according to OECD 301C under GLP conditions. In this study activated sludge was exposed to 100 mg/L of the substance for 28 days. The validity criteria of the test were met. The test item was not biodegraded (0%) during the 28 -days and is therefore not readily biodegradable. The substance slightly decreased the oxygen consumption of the bacteria, which is an indication of the toxicity of the substance or its metabolites. The test item was fully primary degraded (8 -21% residue was measured over the course of the study) and the metabolites were identified: the aldehyde functional group was converted to an acid and/or an alcohol. The concentration of these two could not be quantified and not be distinguished. The pH was not measured to limit the volatilisation of the test item.


Vertoliff relevant transformation products found in the OECD TG 301C (2009): After 28-days there are 2 to 3 main transformation products identified with HPLC. Vertoliff as such has a retention time of 21-22 minutes with a small cis peak and a higher trans-peak. There is a minimal amount of converted product A in the water system. In sludge there are 3 transformation products: Converted product A, retention time 10 min. and minimally converted product B (11 min) and somewhat higher peak is converted product C (12 minutes),. They concluded that converted product A is the Vertoliff acid and the products B and C are the Vertoliff-mono alcohols.

Additional information

The ready biodegradability was also tested in an OECD TG 301D (Closed Bottle test) and under GLP conditions. In this study activated sludge derived from a wastewater treatment plant treating predominantly domestic sewage was inoculated with 1 mg/L of the test substance and was incubated for 28 days under aerobic conditions in the dark. The validity criteria of the test were met. The test material was biodegraded by 4% on day 28 and should therefore be classified as not readily biodegradable.
