One key study performed according to OECD 301B, CO2 evolution test is presented. This test was conducted to GLP and the reference substance was sodium acetate. 2,4-Dichlorophenol did not meet the criteria for biodegradation in this study, > = 60% degradation relative to the theoretical CO2 value. In addition four biodegradation tests in water are reported in the SIDS dossier as supporting references. One test of reliability 2 indicates that following the OECD Guidelines 301C, no ready biodegradability was observed after 28 days with domestic sludge. Two studies carried out according to the OECD Guidelines 302B (reliability 2) in aerobic conditions with adapted activated sludge indicate that the substance is inherently biodegradable(98–100 % after 120 hours).

In anaerobic conditions, the only reliable study relates to a primary degradation. About 90% of 2,4-DCP are transformed in 4-chlorophenol after 21 days.

An additional publication measured the degradation of the substance in stream water. Stream water microorganisms degraded the substance in 40 days at 20 degrees C.

Consequently it is concluded that 2,4-Dichlorophenol is not biodegradable in an aerobic aqueous environment.
