Additional information

Skin:

Primary skin irritation of 2 -methyl-2 -pentene-1 -al, tested on rabbits, records in a 10-grade ordinal series the severest reaction on the clipped skin of any of five albino rabbits within 24 hours on application of 0.01 ml. of undiluted sample. Grade 1 indicates the least visible capillary injection from undiluted chemical. Grade 6 indicates necrosis when undiluted, and Grade 10 indicates necrosis from a 0.01 % solution. Test item 2 -methyl-2 -pentene-1 -al showed a primary skin irritation of 2 on a scale of 10 (Smyth, 1954).

Eye:

In a primary eye irritation study, 0.005 mL of undiluted 2 -methyl-2 -pentene-1 -al was instilled into the conjunctival sac of albino rabbits for 18-24 hours. Irritation was scored by the method of Smyth and Carpenter (1946). In the study the test substance was rated grade 5 of max. 10, corresponding to severe eye damage (Carpenter, 1946).

Effects on eye irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results obtained in skin irritation studies with rabbits the test substance has not to be classified with respect to skin irritation according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP, GHS).

Based on the results obtained in an eye irritation study with rabbits (severe eye irritation, score 5 /10) the test substance has to be classified with respect to eye irritation, Xi, R41, "Risk of serious damage to the eye" according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and with cat. 1, H318 "Causes serious eye damage" according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP, GHS).
