Additional information

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation, the substance 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylene] hydrazone was found to be a yellow coloured powder.

Melting point:

The melting point determination of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) methylene]hydrazone(CAS No. 2387-03-3) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and using metal block/capillary apparatus. The test item showed colour change from yellow to orange and then to red after 200°C. It started vaporising from 302.5°C and started moving upwards in capillary till 315°C. It condensed at the upper part of the capillary that was outside the metal block apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean sublimation temperature range was found to be 302.5°C -315°C at 981.8hPa

Boiling point: Waiver

According to Column II of Annex VII, the boiling point study does not need to be conducted for solids which either melt above 300 °C or decompose before boiling.

The substance 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylene]hydrazone is a solid at room temperature and it is reported to sublimate at a temperature of 302.5-315 deg C without melting.Hence, it is not feasible to determine boiling point and the endpoint was considered for waiver.

 Density:

The density of test item 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) methylene] hydrazone (CAS No. 2387-03-3) was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02 using glass pyknometer. The density of the test item was found to be 0.9349 g/cm3at 200C and 977.7 hPa.

Granulometry:

The particle size distribution of test item 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) methylene] hydrazone (CAS No. 2387-03-3) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was found to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron.

Vapour pressure

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted if the melting point is above 300 °C. The experimental melting of the chemical was estimated to be 301oC. Thus, this end point was considered for waiver and it is expected that the vapour pressure of this chemical shall be low.

Partition co-efficient

The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) methylene] hydrazone(CAS No. 2387-03-3) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. The reference substances were chosen according to structural similarity with the test substance. The reference substances were4 acetyl pyridine,Benzene,Toluene,Ethylbenzene,Naphthalene, Biphenyl, n butyl benzene, DDThaving Pow value ranging from 0.5 to 6.5. TheLog Powvalue was found tobe 6.269 ± 0.007at 25°C.

Water solubility:

The test chemical Pigment Yellow 101 was insoluble in waterr.

Surface Tension:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, this end point was not considered for testing since surface activity is not a desired property of the chemical 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde (Synonym: C.I. Pigment Yellow 101) considering its use as a fluorescent pigment for dyeing and printing.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) methylene] hydrazone (CAS No. 2387-03-3) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be 182.3°C at 980.3 hPa

Auto Flammability:

The experimental melting point of the chemical 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde (Synonym: C.I. Pigment Yellow 101) is approximately 300oC. Thus, the chemical is unlikely to be "Auto Flammable" considering the high melting point. Thus, this end point was considered for waiver.

Flammability:

2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylene]hydrazone does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylene]hydrazone is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus trisodium 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylene]hydrazone was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study is scientifically unjustified since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde (Synonym: C.I. Pigment Yellow 101). Thus, the chemical 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde (Synonym: C.I. Pigment Yellow 101) is not likely to be explosive.

Oxidising Properties:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the substance 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde (Synonym: C.I. Pigment Yellow 101) is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials on the basis of the chemical structure. It is an organic substance not containing oxygen or halogen atoms and these elements are not chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen. Thus, the chemical is not likely to have oxidising property.

pH:

The pH determination of test item 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbaldehyde [(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) methylene]hydrazone (CAS No. 2387-03-3 ) was done following OECD guideline 122. The pH of 1% w/v aqueous solution was measured with the help of pH meter/probe and it was observed to be 7.83 at 28.7 °C.
