Experimental data on the aquatic toxicity of Fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0) are not available. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, read-across to the main component octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9) and the structurally similar substances hexyl dodecanoate (CAS 34316-64-8) and isopropyl myristate (CAS 110-27-0) was conducted.

The target and source substances are monoesters of primary and secondary alcohols and linear C8 –C17 fatty acids. The target substance fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters is an UVCB substance comprising linear C8-10 fatty acids esterified with octanol. The main source substance octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9), a C8 fatty acid esterified with octanol, is a component of the target substance. The two source substances Hexyl dodecanoate (CAS 34316-64-8) and isopropyl myristate (CAS 110-27-0) are linear saturated and unsatured fatty acids with a chain length of C12 - C17. The fatty acid chains are esterified with hexanol (a primary alcohol) and isopropanol (a secondary alcohol) respectively. The target and source substances are characterised by similar physico-chemical properties. All substances are readily biodegradable, poorly soluble in water (WS <0.05 mg/L) and are not volatile (VP <0.1 Pa). The log Kow of target and source substances is generally high (>6.5) and increases with fatty acid chain length. All source substances are characterised by a similar ecotoxicological profile. The substances are not toxic to aquatic organisms up to the limit of water solubility. Short-term aquatic toxicity data is available for all trophic levels (fish, invertebrates, algae). Long-term data is available for aquatic invertebrates and algae. Based on the experimental data with suitable read across substances, Fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters has low toxicity to aquatic organisms. In both short and long term studies (including the microorganism toxicity test); generally, no effects occurred up to the water solubility limit. Additionally, the exposure concentrations of aquatic organisms are expected to be very low, due to the low water solubility. Thus, Fatty acids, C8-10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0) is not considered to be harmful to aquatic organisms at acute and long-term (chronic) exposure and inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced to a biological treatment system.
