Since no studies assessing the biodegradation potential of Fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0) are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the main component Octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9) was conducted. Further justification of the read-across approach is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and the analogue justification document in section 13.

The key study with octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9) was conducted according to OECD guideline 301D and GLP (Stelter 1994). Non-adapted domestic sewage was used as inoculum. During the 28-day test period, biodegradation reached 89%, based on O2 consumption, and the 10-day window criterion was met. Thus, octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9) can be considered readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria. Based on the structural and profile similarities of target and source substance, the assessment of ready biodegradability can also be considered true for Fatty acids, C8-10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-90-0).

This conclusion is supported by QSAR calculations for the two components octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9) and decyl octanoate (CAS 2306-89-0) using BIOWIN v4.10 (BASF 2015 a,b). According to Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (Q)SAR results can be used if (1) the scientific validity of the (Q)SAR model has been established, (2) the substance falls within the applicability domain of the (Q)SAR model, (3) the results are adequate for the purpose of classification and labeling and/or risk assessment and (4) adequate and reliable documentation of the applied method is provided. For both components the QSAR tool predicted ready biodegradability.
