Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Additional information

Specific investigations were reported in literature where Docusate sodium was used as surfactant, however the studies were rather mechanistic and did not further contribute to NOAEC determination:

- The effect of 1% Docusate sodium solution in a vehicle of equal volumes of 95% ethanol and normal saline and administered by ultrasonic nebulizer was studied inadult anesthetized mongrel dogs(Nieman & Bredenburg, 1985). Data suggest that pulmonary edema can be induced by increased alveolar surface tension and support the concept that one of the major roles of pulmonary surfactant is to prevent pulmonary edema.

- Pulmonary clearance of technetium-99m-labeled diethylenetriamine pentaacetatic acid (99mTc-DTPA) for 3 h after 0.125 - 2% Docusate sodium aerosol administration inrabbits(Evander et al., 1994). No animals developed respiratory distress. The detergent induced a biexponentrial clearance of 99mTc-DTPA by accelerating the transfer of tracer across the alveolocapilliary barrier in a proportion of lung units in a dose-related manner.

- Pulmonary clearance of inhaled 99mTc diethylenetriamine penta acetic acid (DTPA), 99mTc-sestambi and 99mTc-dimethyl iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) was studied in normalrabbits, and rabbits administered Docusate sodium (Nilsson & Wollmer, 1993). Surfactant dysfunction affected the transfer of water soluble substances (99mTc-DTPA) but not of substances with high lipid solubility (99mTc-HIDA).
