Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Sodium sulfide is produced and marketed in the form of plain flakes. The average of the median physical particle size D50 of Na2S (commercial form, type ca. 60 %) is approximately 3,500 µm (study result)
Total Dustiness of the airborn fraction of Na2S (commercial form, type ca. 60 %): 0.31 mg/g (study result).
MMAD (mono modal distribution) of airborne fraction: MMAD = 33.93 µm
GSD of MMAD: GSD = 2.79 µm
Fractional deposition in human respiratory tract (MPPD model, based on calculated MMAD):
Head (ET): 44.23 %; Tracheobronchial (TB): 0.22 %; Pulmonary (PU): 0.49 %

Additional information

For the evaluation of this endpoint, data from a study (Parr, 2010; Grewe, 2010) that was conducted according to national standard (DIN 55992 -1:2006, modified Heubach method) and data from a guideline compliant study (OECD 110, Smeykal, 2010) were used as key information.

The Parr, 2010; Grewe, 2010 - study considers the airborne fraction of sodium sulfide, which is exposure-related and relevant for workplace conditions. In the other study (Smeykal, 2010), the airborne fraction of sodium sulfide was not determined, but the total of the substance used for sieving analysis. This is not exposure-related and not relevant for workplace conditions.
