Tests with three different magnesium samples with different particle sizes (D50 39.3 µm up to 668.3 µm) were conducted at BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung) in accordance with UN recommendations on the transport of dangerous good, manual of tests and criteria, part III UN test N.4. Studies for self-heating testing should be initiated in accordance to that manual for classification and labelling purposes in the sense of Regulation (EC) 1272/2008.
Since magnesium powder is already legal classified in accordance to Directive 67/548/EEC Annex I as being self-heating, but during literature search no valid study could be made available to support of disprove this classification, testing was initiated.
Magnesium powder down to a D50 of 39 µm does not meet the criteria of Division 4.2 "Self-heating substance" and also not the criteria for classification as "Self-heating substances or mixtures" in sense of Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. Thus, the test item is regarded to be non self-heating and should not be classified as such.
In addition an auto flammability screening test was conducted in accordance to Regulation (EC) 440/2008 A.16 with magnesium powder (D50 58.6 µm) that results in a self-ignition temperature of 390°C.
