Description of key information

The EC50 for the respiration inhibition of activated sludge by trimethylolpropane was determined according to the EU Guideline C.11 to be > 1000 mg/L. The EC10 was > 1000 mg/L as well.

Key study:

The respiration inhibition of activated sludge predominantly from a domestic sewage treatment plant caused by trimethylolpropane was determined according to the EU Guideline C.11 with an incubation time of 3 hours. The concentrations tested were 10, 100 and 1000 mg/L. The EC50 of the reference substance 3,5 - dichlorophenol was 9.2 mg/L ( 95% C.I. 3 - 24 mg/L). The respiration rates of the 2 controls differed less than 15% from each other. The EC50 and the EC10 for trimethylolpropane were determined to be > 1000 mg/L.

The validity criteria of the guideline are fulfilled. The deviation from the guideline used is considered, not to have any negative impact on the result.

Further studies:

A 24-h test was performed with Pseudomonas fluorescens by following a modified version of DEV, L8 (1968): "Determination of the biological adverse effect of toxic wastewater to bacteria". An EC0 of 10,000 mg/L was determined. An 24 -h EC50 > 10,000 mg/L may be derived from the result.

The respiration inhibition of activated sludge by trimethylolpropane was investigated according to the German ISO 8192 "Test for Inhibition of Oxygen Consumption by Activated Sludge". The bacterial respiration was considerably stimulated by the test substance increasing up to 49%.
