Reliable acute toxicity data for fish are available for sulfite and thiosulfate compounds. The 96-h LC50 for fish (O. mykiss) ranging from 177.8 mg disodium disulfite/L to 770 mg ammonium thiosulfate/L, which corresponds to 149 mg/L and 831 mg/L SO32—equivalents, respectively.The available acute fish toxicity study with sodium dithionite cannot be considered as reliable due to extremely low oxygen saturation and the associated indirect effects of oxygen depletion on the test organisms at the relevant concentration. It can be assumed that the actual EC/LC50 is far higher than the concluded LC50. The acute toxicity data for all sulfite and thiosulfate compounds indicate that respective EC/LC50 values are well above 100 mg/L in terms of sulfite equivalents.

Thus, sulfite, thiosulfate and dithionate appear to have a low potential for acute toxicity to fish.
