In a chemical plant in San Francisco Bay area, accidental rupture of a pipeline coupled to a silicon tetrachloride storage tank resulted in a spill of over 1200 gallons of the liquid silane onto the ground.

Rapid decomposition of the compound from reaction with the air led to formation of a large, opaque cloud containing hydrogen chloride and finely-divided silica. Six male employees were exposed for 10 -20 minutes before being referred to the medical clinic. Clinical signs included lacrimation, rhinorrhoea, burning in mouth and throat, headache, coughing and mild wheezing which was resolved within 24 hours for the majority. An indication of mild, obstructive airway disease in 4 of 6 employees were observed at the clinic and still detectable at follow-up carried out during the year after the accident. However, this might have been a pre-existing condition, related to smoking, obesity or asthma (Kizer et al., 1984).
