Description of key information

In the test conditions, no true auto flammability temperature is observed for sodium hypophosphite. The substance decomposes at temperatures above 238°C into phosphine and oxides of phosphorus and the apparent auto flammability temperature of 239°C is the result of the self ignition of phosphine.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One study is reported for this endpoint. The study was performed according to method A16 requirements from regulation (CE) n°440/2008. The temperature profile showed an auto flammability temperature of 239°C. However as the substance starts to decompose at 238°C and the gas phosphine is formed which self ignites when the concentration in air is min. 1%, this observed self ignition temperature is not the true value and is considered the temperature at which the phosphine self ignites.

As the study was performed according to guideline by an accredited laboratory it is considered as reliable with restrictions.
