Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The 72-hour algae NOEC was 150 mg/L (measured as maleic acid in neutralized conditions and the highest dose tested).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
150 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
150 mg/L

Additional information

Toxicity tests to the freshwater alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly known as Selenastrum carpricornutum) found no effects on either growth or biomass after 72 hours at 150 mg/liter maleic anhydride. Arithmetic average concentration in the highest concentration nominally 150 mg/liter as maleic acid. Because no effects were observed in all concentrations, the EC50 can be estimated as > 150 mg/liter.
