Description of key information

The melting point of the test substance was determined to be <-20°C in a study performed according to EU Method A.1 (Harlan, 2012).

Additional information

A melting point of <-20°C was reported in a well-documented company study which meets generally accepted scientific principles. The substance did not refreeze upon re-cooling. Therefore, the melting/freezing point is considered to be <-20oC. The study was conducted according to EU Method A.1 (Melting / Freezing Temperature) and Method 102 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals. Supporting studies are also available but are of lesser quality. For one of the studies the original reference was not available for review and no further information is available. Consequently, the reliability of the supporting data is with restrictions. In 2001 the American ACGIH has reported a melting point of -80°C. The result was obtained from a secondary source which has been subject to peer-review and is recommended for use in chemical safety assessment by the ACGIH. The result is considered reliable and supports the result of the key study. A melting point of -5.8°C was also predicted by a reliable QSAR (ECOSAR).

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the melting point study does not need to be conducted below a lower limit of -20°C. The existing data are sufficient to indicate a melting point below this temperature.
