Description of key information

As this substance is highly reactive the auto-flammability of the main degradation product (2-ethylhexanol) is used as a key value.

Additional information

There is enough evidence on the degradation products and the analogue substances in the category of "highly water reactive titanates" that this substance has no auto-flammability properties. There is a mechanistic reasoning to the read-across from degradation products and the analogue substances in the category (see category and read-across justification in Annexes of the CSR). This substance is highly water reactive and will decompose rapidly when in contact with moisture or water. Complete hydrolysis will happen with no other degradation products than 2-ethylhexanol and titanium dioxide.

The testing is unnecessary as the self-ignition properties are related to the degradation products which are not self-igniting. In addition, the results of auto-flammability test (EU A15) of the analogue category member titanium tetra(octanolate), branched and linear is not presenting any self-ignition as the self-ignition temperature is 365 deg. Celsius (Brekelmans 2013). This analogue substance contains commercial solvent (alcohols C7 -9-iso, C8-rich, CAS no 68526 -83 -0), which consists mainly of isooctanol (93 %). This solvent is also analogue to the degradation product of the target substance; 2 -ethylhexanol which is an isomer of octyl alcohol.

In conclusion, the lowest auto-ignition T is used as a key value in CSA. This experimental value is determined for 2-ethylhexanol by using EU method A.15 (Enste-Diefenbach 2009).
