Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Taken together the studies from BASF (2007), the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, (2002) and the calculated values from USEPA (2008) are considered to demonstrate that diisobutyl phthalate is readily biodegradable.

Additional information

In an OECD 301D guideline-following study (BASF 2007) diisobutyl phthalate was found to degrade by 66 -70% within 28 days. A study (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, 2002) is available which reports near-complete degradation of the test substance after 28 days. These studies indicate that the substance is readily biodegradable. Neither study reports on whether the 10-day window criterion is met.

The QSAR BioWin (USEPA 2008) predicts that the substance biodegrades fast, with a primary biodegradation timeframe of the order of days, and an ultimate biodegradation timeframe of the order of weeks.

A study (Clarke, 2010) is available which reports a 28 -day biodegradation value of 40%, which does not meet the criteria for ready biodegradability.
