Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The inhibition of degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The test substance is soluble in water and dissociates to morpholinium and toluene-4-sulphonate. Since no studies of the test substance on the toxicity of microorganisms are available, the assessment has been performed with the substance's dissociation products.

The effect of morpholine on aquatic microorganisms was tested in multiple studies. Three studies were conducted according to OECD guideline 209 - one with domestic activated sludge [BASF AG 1990] and two with industrial activated sludge [BASF AG 1980 & 1990]. In all cases the EC20 was > 1000 mg/L after the exposure period of 30 min. An additional study with Pseudomonas putida is available which has been conducted according to Bringmann's cell growth inhibition test [Bringmann & Kühn 1977]. At test termination after 16 h an EC3 of 310 mg/L was determined.

A single study is available which assesses the microbial toxicity of toluene-4 -sulphonate according to OECD guideline 209. After the exposure period of 3 hours an EC10 of 240 mg/L was determined.

Taking all available information into account it can be concluded that the inhibition of degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
