Since dimethyl ether - boron trifluoride rapidly decomposes in water, the biodegradability of the decomposition products dimethyl ether and boron trifluoride dihydrate is examined. With less than 10 % biodegradation in the OECD test 301 C, diethyl ether is not readily biodegradable (JETOC, 1985). However, dimethyl ether is not classified as dangerous for the environment, neither will it persist in the aquatic compartment, due to its high volatility. Based on the elimination of dimethyl ether by volatilisation and on its harmless nature, no further testing was considered necessary. Boron trifluoride dihydrate is inorganic and is therefore not subject to biodegradation.
