Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention immediately. WARNING: It may be hazardous to the person providing aid to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. when the inhaled material is toxic, infectious or corrosive. Seek immediate medical attention.

Contact with skin: In case of contact, wipe tetrachloride powder from skin with dry cloth and flush skin with plenty of water for at least 20 minutes. call a doctor immediately.  Wash clothing before reuse

Contact with eyes: Rinse thoroughly under running water for 20 minutes; call a doctor or ophthalmologist immediately.

Ingestion: Make sure the victim drinks plenty of water; do not make the victim vomit (perforation risk). Call a doctor immediately. Do not try to neutralize the substance.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing agents: Powder, CO2, dry sand (adapted to products stored in the immediate vicinity).

Prohibited extinguishing agents: Water, foam.

Instructions: DO NOT USE WATER!  Water may cause violent reaction.

Specific risks: Substance is non combustible

May ignite or explode on contact with steam or moist air.

Water hydrolyzes material liberating acidic gas which in contact with metal surfaces can generate flammable and/or explosive hydrogen gas.

Special protection equipment: Self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protection clothing.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions : Avoid generating dusty conditions.  Do not inhale dust. Do not expose spill to water. Use appropriate protection equipment

Precaution to protect the environment: Do not release into sewage system.

Clean-up: Sweep or shovel material into dry containers. Use appropriate tools to put the spilled solid in a convenient waste disposal container.

Recover as much dry product as possible; flush the rest with water

Handling and storage

Handling: Use only in dry, well ventilated areas; avoid contact with water and wet substances; avoid contact with the eyes, skin and clothes.

Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible products; always store in a sealed polyethylene container; prevent dust from forming. Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from water.

8 (corrosive materials)
Special provisions / remarks
Zirconium tetrachloride is classified in packing group III under table A of the ADR (Agreement on Dangerous goods by Road). This packing group must therefore be indicated in the SDS. However, as the manufacturer is aware that ZrCl4 is corrosive category 1B (corrositex test), the relevant packing group to be applied is II. This information will be communicated to users through the SDS in order to enable them to use, handle and transport the substance adequately (minimum Y certified packaging).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Respiratory protection: For activities where exposure to TCZ dust arises: wear mask complying with EN149 or EN405 or equivalent with filter index P3 (EN 143) and E (EN 141)

For activities related to peak exposure to degradation product of TCZ (HCl) : Wear full-face chemical cartridge respirators, complying with EN136 or equivalent with dust and inorganic acid vapours filter - index B, E (EN 141) and P3 (EN 143)

Protecting the hands: Wear acid-proof gloves complying with EN 374-3 indice L or equivalent

Protecting the eyes: Wear safety goggles complying with EN166 (material: polycarbonate) with glasses indice F5 or equivalent

Protecting the skin: For activities related to peak exposure to degradation product of TCZ (HCl) : Wear acid-proof clothing

Special hygiene measures: Do not eat, drink or smoke while working. Remove any soiled clothing. Wash your hands after handling the substance

Stability and reactivity

Chemical stability: Stable in normal pressure and temperature conditions.

Condition to be avoided: Exposure to moist air or water (releases heat and hydrochloric acid)

Materials to be avoided: Exothermic reactions with: ether, ethanol, hydrofluoric acid, alkalis and acids.

Reacts violently with water.

Danger of ignition or formation of flammable gases/vapors on contact with alkaline metals.

Disposal considerations

Disposal of the product: Carefully dispose in water, then neutralize slowly  in controlled facilities.

Handling of containers: Soiled containers should be treated in the same way as the chemical product they contain.
