Description of key information
Zirconium tetrachloride is non flammable and reacts violently with water (EUH014) according to the 1272/2008/CEE regulation (CLP)

Flammability is usually seen as the ease with which the substance can burn or be ignited. However it also includes spontaneously flammability (pyrophoricity) and ignition on contact with water.
Pyrophoricity:
In the daily use and handling of Zirconium tetrachloride during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that Zirconium tetrachloride has pyrophoric properties.
Flammability in contact with water:
Under conditions where Zirconium tetrachloride is in contact with water no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. ZrCl4 is instantly hydrolized in water to zirconium oxide dichloride octahydrate and hydrogene chloride :
ZrCl4 + H20 -->ZrOCl2 + 2 HCl.

This degree includes materials that can undergo chemical change with rapid release of energy at normal temperatures and pressures This also includes materials that may react violently with water or that may form potentially explosive mixtures with water.
The substance will react with water (some violently), releasing corrosive and/or toxic gases, which leads to assign:

-according to the 1272/2008/CEE regulation: EUH014 - "Reacts violently with water"
Flammability:
The test flammability of the test item Zirconium Tetrachloride has been performed by EUROFINS following EC method A.10.This test shows that the substance is not flammable
Justification for classification or non-classification
According to the tests performed following EC method A 10, zirconium tetrachloride is not classified as flammable.
