Description of key information

The acute toxicity to fish is reported in three studies. The study by Curtis (1990) is the key study (EC50>455.3 mg/L), as the concentration of the test material were determined analytically. The supporting study (Freitag, 1988) provides limited information on the exposure concentrations and their verification, however indicates that exposure was controlled in a closed system to reduce volatility. Insufficient information for the interpretation of the third study is available, thus was it not included in the overall assessment.

Additional information

The 96-hour LC50 on Fathead minnow was determined at >659.2 mg/L (the highest concentration tested). Analytical measurements were carried out at the beginning and the end of the test period. This study was chosen as the key study despite limited information on the dose considered in the derivation of the effect concentrations (EC50).

In a supporting study, the 48 hour LC50 on Brachydanio rerio were determined in triplicate experiments: 380, 460 and 540 mg/L, therefore the LC50 for Brachydanio rerio was calculated as the geometrical mean of the LC50 at 455.3 mg/L. Despite limited information on the exposure concentration, the report indicates that exposure was controlled in a closed system to reduce volatility and the endpoint reported corresponds to guideline's requirements at the time of the study (mortality after 48h).The third study provided insufficient information for the interpretation of the study, thus was not included in the overall assessment.
