Nitromethane was not readily biodegraded in the OECD 301D test, less than 10% of the nitromethane degraded within 28 days. In a method developed by the GSF Institute for Ecological Chemistry, 36.2% of the test material degraded to CO2 after 5 days. Thus, the compound can be considered to be inherently biodegradable.
