Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

BASF AG, Safety data sheet Para-tert.-Butylbenzaldehyd, 18.10.2009

General advice:

Remove contaminated clothing. If danger of loss of consciousness, place patient in recovery position and transport accordingly. Apply artificial respiration if necessary. First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety.

If inhaled:

Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention.

On skin contact:

Flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Sterile protective dressing. Seek medical attention.

On contact with eyes:

Immediately wash affected eyes for least 15 minutes under running water wth eyelids held open, consult an eye specialist.

On ingestion:

Rinse mouth immediately and then drink plenty of water, induce vomiting, seek medical attention.

Note to physician:

Treatment: Symptomatic treatment (decontamination, vital functions).

Fire-fighting measures

BASF AG, Safety data sheet Para-tert.-Butylbenzaldehyd, 18.10.2009

Suitable extinguishing media:

water spray, carbon dioxide, dry powder, foam.

Special protective equipment:

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical-protective clothing.

Further information:

Dispose of fire debris and contaminated extinguishing water in accordance with official regulations. Collect contaminated extinguishing water separately, do not allow  to reach sewage or effluent systems.

Accidental release measures

BASF AG, Safety data sheet Para-tert.-Butylbenzaldehyd, 18.10.2009

Personal precautions:

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Ensure adequate ventilation. Information regarding personal protective measures see, chapter 8.

Environmental precautions:

Do not discharge into drains/surface waters/groundwater.

Methods for cleaning up or taking up:

For small amounts: Pick up with suitable absorbent material.

For large amounts: Dike spillage. Vacuum up spilled product.

Dispose of absorbed material in accordance with regulations.

Handling and storage

BASF AG, Safety data sheet Para-tert.-Butylbenzaldehyd, 18.10.2009

Handling:

Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas. Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Wear suitable protective clothing and eye/face protection. Keep container tightly sealed.

Protection against fire and explosion:

Prevent electrostatic charge - sources of ignition should be kept well clear - fire extinguishers should be kept handy.

Storage:

Suitable materials for containers: Low density polyethylene (LDPE), glass, High density polyethylene (HDPE), Stove-lacquer RDL 50

Further information on storage conditions: Keep container tightly closed and dry; store in a cool place. Keep container in a well-ventilated place.

Protect from the effects of light. Protect from air.

Exposure controls / personal protection

BASF AG, Safety data sheet Para-tert.-Butylbenzaldehyd, 18.10.2009

Components with workplace control parameters

none

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection:

Wear respiratory protection if ventilation is inadequate. Gas filter for gases/vapours of organic compounds (boiling point >65 °C, e.g. EN 14387

Type A).

Hand protection:

Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374)

Suitable materials also with prolonged, direct contact (Recommended: Protective index 6,

corresponding > 480 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374):

butyl rubber (butyl) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

nitrile rubber (NBR) - 0.4 mm coating thickness

fluoroelastomer (FKM) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

Suitable materials short-term contact and/or splashes (recommended: At least protective index 2,

corresponding > 30 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374)

polyvinylchloride (PVC) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

chloroprene rubber (CR) - 0.5 mm coating thickness

Supplementary note: The specifications are based on tests, literature data and information of

glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions

(e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in

practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined through testing.

Eye protection:

Safety glasses with side-shields (frame goggles) (e.g. EN 166)

Body protection:

Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting boots, chemical-protection suit (according to

EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of dust).

General safety and hygiene measures:

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.

Stability and reactivity

BASF AG, Safety data sheet Para-tert.-Butylbenzaldehyd, 18.10.2009

Thermal decomposition: approx. 270°C (DTA)

Substances to avoid: acids, bases

Hazardous reactions: No hazardous reactions if stored and handled as prescribed/indicated.

No hazardous decomposition products if stored and handled as  prescribed/indicated.

Disposal considerations

Observe national and local legal requirements.
