Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Different grades of sodium methanethiolate aqueous at 21%, at 33% and at 54% in aqueous solution are commercialized.

The commercialized grades of sodium methanethiolate are made by reaction of sodium hydroxide in solution and methylmercaptan.

The water free from of Sodium methanethiolate is technically very difficult to obtain as the reaction of sodium hydroxide and methylmercaptan creates water. The form registered in this dossier is the sodium methanethiolate solid that can be obtained without adding any water during the process:

CH3SH + NaOH--> CH3SNa + H2O

The SMM solid was made in one of registrant's facilities. The composition of the product was :

CH3SNa: 73%, H2O: 19%

NaOH: 7%

MeOH: 1%

xylene (solvent)<2%

This solid form of sodium methanethiolate is neither produced nor commercialized by the regsitrant thus only study reports on the commercialized grade of the substance are available.
