Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Upon contact with water, the submission substance hexadecyl(trimethoxy)silane (CAS No. 16415-12-6) hydrolyses slowly under environmentally relevant conditions to form the hydrolysis products hexadecylsilantriol and methanol (DT50 > 14 d at pH 4 - 10). Therefore, the environmental hazard assessment for the aquatic compartment is based on the properties of the parent substance, in accordance with REACH guidance for Chemical Safety Assessment R.16 (ECHA, 2016).

For the short-term toxicity to aquatic organisms, experimental studies are available for all three trophic levels. All studies were performed according to standard testing guidelines and in compliance with GLP. The test concentrations applied were well above the limit of water solubility. No short-term toxic effects were observed towards the tested organisms of all three trophic levels up to the highest tested concentration. Due to the very low water solubility of the substance, the long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was also investigated. This chronic study did not indicate any long-term toxicity toward Daphnia magna, resulting in a NOEC of ≥ 10 mg/L.

Furthermore, no toxic effects toward activated sludge microorganisms were observed in the available experimental study which resulted in an EC10 (3 h) of > 100 mg/L.
