A GLP study according to OECD 301D on the ready biodegradability was performed with a technical concentrate of Fosetyl-sodium. Under the test conditions the percentage biodegradation of the active ingredient Sodium ethyl phosphonate (exposure to a concentration of 7.09 mg active ingredient/L) of the test item was determined to be -1% after 28 days of incubation. The results are based on concentrations of the active ingredient sodium ethyl phosphonate (content of 22.1 % w/w in test item). Thus, the test item cannot considered to be ready biodegradable.

In order to further evaluate the potential for persistence of the test item in the environment, a second study was performed on the inherent biodegradation of the test substance according to OECD guideline 302C and under GLP criteria. Under the test conditions, the test substance (101.5 mg/L) reached a biodegradation of 86.9% after 28 days based on BOD and > 99.9% based on residue analysis of the test substance. Therefore, Fosetyl-Sodium can be considered inherently biodegradable.
