SD = Standard deviation - Reported statistics and error estimates:
- NOEC/LOEC were determined by calculation of statistical significance of growth rate and yield. As standard One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and DUNNETT’s test were used for NOEC/LOEC calculations. When running a One Way Analysis of Variance a Normality test and an Equal Variance test were done first. The SHAPIRO-WILK-Test was used to test for normally distributed populations. The Levene median test was used for equal variance. P-values for both Normality and Equal Variance tests are 0.05. The a-value (acceptable probability of incorrectly concluding that there is a difference) is a=0.05.

- Conclusions:
- In this study Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate was found to inhibit the growth of the freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus after 72 hours. The NOEC-values of the test item for inhibition of growth rate and inhibition of yield after 72 hours were nominal 10.0 mg/L and 1.00 mg/L, respectively. The LOEC-values of the test item for inhibition of growth rate and inhibition of yield after 72 hours were nominal 31.6 mg/L and 3.16 mg/L, respectively. The EC50-values of the test item for inhibition of growth rate (ErC50) and yield (EyC50) with 95 % Confidence Intervals after 72 hours were > 100 and 43.7 (35.0 – 55.5) mg/L, respectively.
The corresponding NOEC-values of the active ingredient inhibition of growth rate and inhibition of yield after 72 hours were 7.23 mg a.i./L and 0.723 mg a.i./L, respectively. The LOEC-values of the active ingredient for inhibition of growth rate and inhibition of yield after 72 hours were 22.8 mg a.i./L and 2.28 mg a.i./L, respectively. The EC50-values of the active ingredient for inhibition of growth rate (ErC50) and yield (EyC50) with 95 % Confidence Intervals after 72 hours were > 72.3 and 31.6 (25.2 – 40.1) mg a.i./L, respectively.
All effect levels are given based on nominal test item and active ingredient concentrations of Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate.
Based on read-across, this algae toxicity result is applied to the registration (target) substance SMLT. This is a conservative read-across since the available data on other alkyl taurate amide salts indicates toxicity increases with increasing chain length, and SMCT contains constituents with chain lengths in the range C12-C18 whilst SMLT is essentially 'pure' C12. - Executive summary:
The toxicity of Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate(batch number: DEB4003323)to the unicellular freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined according to the principles of OECD 201 at Dr.U.Noack-Laboratorienin 31157 Sarstedt, Germany from 2012-11-19 to 2012-11-22. The aim of the study was to assess the effects on growth rate and yield over a period of 72 hours.
The study was conducted under static conditions with an initial cell density of 4332 cells/mL. Based on a preliminary test 5 concentration levels were tested in a geometrical series with a nominal dilution factor of Ö10: 1.00 - 3.16 - 10.0 - 31.6 - 100 mg/L corresponding to active ingredient concentrations of 0.723 - 2.28 - 7.23 - 22.8 - 72.3 mg a.i./L. Three replicates were tested for each test item concentration and six replicates for the control. Environmental conditions were determined to be within the acceptable limits.
The concentrations of Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate were analytically verified by LC-MS/MS at test start and test end of all test concentrations and the control.
The measured concentrations of the active ingredient of Sodium methyl cocoyl taurateat test start were in the range of 105 to 111 % and after 72 hours in the range of 111 to 114 % of the nominal values. Therefore, all effect values given are based on the nominal test item and active ingredient concentrations Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate.IMPORTANT NOTE TO AVOID CONFUSION:
As the registration substance is a UVCB this means that the test item is 100% active ingredient.

Description of key information
In this study Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate was found to inhibit the growth of the freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus after 72 hours.
