Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
adsorption / desorption: screening
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient and the adsorption potential of this substance is related to this parameter

Description of key information

Methylsilanediol (hydrolysis product): Log Koc = 0.5
Methylsilanetriol (hydrolysis product): Log Koc = -0.23

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Koc at 20 °C:
-0.23

Additional information

Diethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 2031-62-1) hydrolyses rapidly in water successively to methylsilanediol and methylsilanetriol as well as ethanol (half-life < 2 min at 25 °C and pH 4-7). Due to the very fast hydrolysis of the parent substance the assessment of adsorption is only relevant for the hydrolysis products. The silanol hydrolysis products have a low octanol–water partition coefficient (log Pow: -1.0 and -2.4, respectively) and thus low potential for adsorption. In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VIII, 9.3.1., column 2, the adsorption/desorption screening test does not need to be conducted. Since the parent compound is not stable in the environment further information on the adsorption behavior of the substance was collected by appropriate calculations only for the silanol hydrolysis products methylsilanediol and methylsilanetriol. The adsorption was predicted using the TGD (Technical Guidance Document) non-hydrophobics log Kow prediction method (EC, 2003). The calculated Koc is 3.16 (log Koc: 0.5) for methylsilanediol and 0.59 (log Koc: -0.23) for methylsilanetirol. The log Koc value of the final silanol hydrolysis product, methylsilanetriol was used for the environmental exposure assessment, since the hydrolysis study showed that the substance hydrolysis to methylsilanetriol in less than 2 min at pH7.
