Description of key information

Chlorphenesin is not skin sensitiser.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

An LLNA test on Chlorphenesin was performed in 2001 (study report of 2003), before the implementation of the Regulation (EC n.1223/2009) with negative results. There are few cases of sensitized people after repeated contact with cosmetic products containing Chlorphenesin as preservative. The rate is low and not enough to trigger classification as skin sensitiser.

Even though the result from epidemiological studies are questionable, as precautionary approach the classification H315 (skin irr., cat.2) is assigned according to the CLP Regulation (EC n.1272/2008).

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available

Justification for classification or non-classification

Chlorphenesin is not classified for skin sensitisation according to the CLP Regulation (EC.n.1272/2008). For justification see the results of available studies.
