Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

There is no data available for diethyl butylmalonate (CAS # 133 -08 -4). For C&L purposes, the following data available for structurally similar substances cited in the 2006 OECD SIDS “malonic acid diesters” (UNEP Publications, Final 10/2006) is suitable for read across:

Dimethylmalonate, CAS # 108-59-8

Skin: not irritating

Eye: irritating

Diethylmalonate, CAS # 105-53-3

Additional information

There is no data available for diethyl butylmalonate (CAS # 133 -08 -4). For C&L purposes, the following data available for structurally similar substances cited in the 2006 OECD SIDS “malonic acid diesters” (UNEP Publications, Final 10/2006) is suitable for read across:

Skin:

Dimethylmalonate, CAS # 108-59-8

DMM was not irritating to rabbit skin in a study according to OECD TG 404 and GLP with 4 hours

exposure under semni occlusive conditions. Slight erythema was only observed 30 to 60 minutes

after the removal of the patch (OECD SIDS, 2006).

Diethylmalonate, CAS # 105-53-3

No guideline study is available for DEM, but it was reported t0 be slightly irritating to rabbit skin

after 24 h occlusive exposure (Moreno, 1975 cited in OECD SIDS, 2006).

Eye

Dimethylmalonate, CAS # 108-59-8

When undiluted DMM was administered to rabbit eyes (0.1 ml) without rinsing, slight 10 moderate

eye irritation was observed including conjunctival redness, chemosis, iriditis and slight corneal

opacity. All effects were reversible within 8 days. The study was performed according to OECD TG

405 and GLP (OECD SIDS, 2006).

Diethylmalonate, CAS # 105-53-3

For DEM a comparable study according to FIFRA, F 81-4 and GLP

showed comparable slight to moderate irritating effects after administration of 0.1 ml of the

undiluted test substance to rabbit eyes (OECD SIDS, 2006).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data for read across substances Dimethylmalonate, CAS # 108-59-8 and Diethylmalonate, CAS # 105 -53 -3, Diethyl butylmalonate (CAS # 133 -08 -4) would require classification for eye irritation (Cat. 2 according to CLP) but not for skin irritation (not irritating to the skin).
