Description of key information

When the fuse is burned for 8 cm, it is measured the time rate of burning of the subsequent 10 cm. The test is reapeted 5 times. The average is 9.8 s.

A wetted zone could stop the propagation of the flame.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Measured burning rate for calcium hypophosphite is 9.8s per 10 cm, about 10 mm/s.

Regulation EC n. 1272/2008, Annex I, Part 2, subsection 2.7.1.1 gives the following definition:

"A flammable solid means a solid which is readily combustible, or may cause or contribute to fire through friction.

Readily combustible solids are powdered, granular, or pasty substances or mixtures which are dangerous if they can be easily ignited by brief contact with an ignition source, such as a burning match, and if the flame spreads rapidly."

Ca(H2PO2)2 is classified H228 cat.1 based on its burning time < 45 seconds, its burning rate > 2,2 mm/s.
