Description of key information

This study was conducted to determine the toxicity of N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-C12-18(even numbered)-alkylamide to the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. This study was carried out in general accordance with OECD Guideline 201.

The study was performed with the following nominal test concentrations: control, 0.0047, 0.015, 0.048, 0.156, 0.5 mg/L.  After correction for background noise all concentrations at the start of the test with the exception of 0.015 and 0.048 mg/L were within ± 20 % of the nominal concentrations. Initial measured values for the 0.15 and 0.048 mg/L concentrations were 840 and 163% of nominal, these were re-analysed and values were found to be 62.2 and 45.7% of nominal.  Measurement of the remaining dissolved fraction and the glass bound fraction at the end of the test demonstrates that approximately 9% of the test chemical was bound to the glass at the end of the test. Due to the test substance not being significantly biodegradable during the test period and considering that only 1.1% of the test chemical was detected in solution at the end of the test the remainder of the test substance can be assumed to be bound to suspended solids or algae. The results of the study are based on the nominal exposure concentrations.

The 72 hour EbC50 was calculated to be 0.030 mg/L (with 95% confidence limits of 0.021to 0.039 mg/L), the corresponding 72 hour EbC10was calculated to be 0.015 mg/L (with 95% confidence limits of 0.006 to 0.21mg/L).

The 72 hour ErC50 was calculated to be 0.086 mg/L (with 95% confidence limits of 0.037to 0.20 mg/L), the corresponding 72 hour ErC10was calculated to be 0.015 mg/L (with 95% confidence limits 0.0004 to 0.035 mg/L).

Additional information

This study was conducted to determine the toxicity of N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-C12-18(even numbered)-alkylamide to the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. This study was carried out in general accordance with OECD Guideline 201. Specific modifications to the guideline were that natural surface water was used for testing which was supplement with the recommended nutrients from the OECD algal medium at 50% concentration and NaHCO3 at 150%. The bulk approach was applied to the test methodology allowing the use of total aquatic concentrations for calculation of endpoints.
