Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
data from handbook or collection of data
Justification for type of information:
No analysis has been performed and it should be noted in some publications that analysis was not possible due to an absence of the test material. It is expected that the substance will rapidly hydrolyse to the respective alcohols and carbon disulphide.

Description of key information

A number of fish studies have been reviewed and all demonstrate an LC50 in the range of 10 - 100 mg/l giving a reasonable weight of evidence for classification

The more reliable of these sources, and cited by other organisations, is LC50 10 mg/l

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water fish

Fresh water fish
Dose descriptor:
LC50
Effect concentration:

Additional information

The listed toxicity on fish of different xanthates indicate that potassium ethyl xanthate (CAS# 140-89-6) is much more toxic than sodium ethyl xanthate (CSA# 140-90-9) and toxicity of the latest one is not much higher than sodium isopropyl xanthate. The toxicity decrease sharply with increasing temperature.
