Effects of tert-dodecanethiol (tertiododecylmercaptan) on soil macroorganisms was assayed by using the OECD 222 earthworm (Eisenia fetida) reproduction inhibition test. No effects on adult growth were recorded for an exposure duration of 4 weeks. No effects on reproduction (number of offsprings) was observed at the end of exposure period, 56 days, up to 100 mg tertiododecylmercaptan/kg dw. However, no measurements of test substance were made and as the test substance is volatile the OECD Guideline does not recommend the test for such cases. The study cannot be considered valid for these reasons.

The test substance is a synthetic chain tranfert agent consumed in the process and effluents are controlled. It is also volatile so any trace residues of substance which are not eliminated would be rapidly lost to air. Thus it is not considered necessary to perform further terrestrial studies beyond the existing reprotoxicity study on Eisenia.
