Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Thermal sensitivity:

For each test 41.8 g of the test substance were filled into the testing tube to a total volume of 27 cm³ (corresponding to a height of 60 mm). Using the 6 mm orifice in the three single tests no reaction (flame, sparks, bang) was observed during the testing time of 300 s. After about 40 s – 45 s the steel tubes glowed red in all cases. No further observation was made until the burners were turned off after 5 minutes. After cooling down it was observed that all the tubes were unchanged. Using the 2 mm orifice in the three single tests no reaction (flame, sparks, bang) was observed during the testing time of 300 s. After about 40 s – 45 s the steel tubes glowed red in all cases. No further observation was made until the burners were turned off after 5 minutes. After cooling down it was observed that all the tubes were unchanged. No thermal sensitivity of the test item induced by heating under defined confinement was observed.

Mechanical shock sensitivity:

The sample was sieved (sieve size 0.5 mm). All that has passed through the sieve was used for testing.

None of the six single tests with an impact energy of 40 J showed any sparking or exploding. Therefore the series with an impact energy of 7.5 J was not necessary. No impact sensitivity of the test item was observed.

Mechanical friction sensitivity:

The sample was sieved (sieve size 0.5 mm). All that has passed through the sieve was used for testing.

None of six single tests with a friction force of 360 N showed any visible or audible explosion or crackling, or sparking. Therefore the series with a friction force of 120 N was not necessary. No friction sensitivity of the test item was observed.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Tin disulfide is non explosive.
Executive summary:

As the sample of tin disulfide was neither shock sensitive nor thermally or friction sensitive, according to the criteria of the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008 of May 2008, test A.14, it is not representing an explosive hazard and has not to be considered to present a danger of explosion. This information is considered relevant for the risk assessment of tin disulfide.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

As the sample of tin disulfide was neither shock sensitive nor thermally or friction sensitive, according to the criteria of the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008 of May 2008, test A.14, it is not representing an explosive hazard and has not to be considered to present a danger of explosion. This information is considered relevant for the risk assessment of tin disulfide.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As the sample of tin disulfide was neither shock sensitive nor thermally or friction sensitive, according to the criteria of the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008 of May 2008, test A.14, it is not representing an explosive hazard and has not to be considered to present a danger of explosion.

Hence, no classification and labelling is needed according to GHS and CLP.
