Tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) is a colorless liquid with a melting point of < -60 ˚C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a) and a boiling point of 108.3 ˚C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a). The relative density of TAEE is 0.76 (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a), the vapour pressure is 5500 Pa at 25 ˚C (Harlan Laboratories Ltd, 2009j). The substance has a water solubility of 3920 mg/l at 20 ˚C and pH 4.8 (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a) and log Pow of ca. 2.95-3.35 at 25 ˚C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a). The substance is not surface active; the surface tension of 90% saturated aqueous solution was determined to be 64.48 mN/m at 20 ˚C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a). The static viscosity of TAEE is 0.648 mm²/s at 20 ˚C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a).

Based on the flash point of -1.3 ˚C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a) and a boiling point of 108.3 ˚C, the substance should be classified as highly flammable (F, R11) in accordance with EU Directive 67/548/EEC. According to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 TAEE has to be classified as a Flammable Liquid Cat. 2 (H225).

The molecular structure of TAEE does not contain groups that indicate potential reactivity with water or pyrophoric properties. The auto-ignition temperature of TAEE is 289 °C (Covance Laboratories Ltd, 2009a). The substance is not expected to have explosive and oxidising properties.

The substance remains undissociated in water, as it does not contain chemical groups which can undergo dissociation. TAEE is a stable chemical and is not expected to show instability when mixed with typical organic solvents.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, a study on granulometry is not needed as TAEE is a liquid and used in a non solid form.
