Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The ready biodegradability of the test item was assessed over a 28 day period. The test material attained 94 % biodegradation after 28 days but withoutreaching the 10-day window. Thus, the test item was classified readily biodegradable, but failing 10-day window.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable but failing 10-day window

Additional information

The test substance DL-Panthenol was investigated for its ready biodegradability in a DOC Die Away Test over a period of 28 days according to EU method C.4 A and OECD guideline 301 A. The biodegradation was followed DOC removal during exposure. The biodegradation of DL-Panthenol was of 94% in 28 days. Therefore, DL-Panthenol was found to be biodegradable under the test conditions over the 28-day exposure to activated sludge. However, the pass level for ready biodegradability was not reached. According to OECD Guidelines, the pass level for ready biodegradability is 70% removal of DOC. This pass value has to be reached in a 10-day window within the 28-day period of the test. The 10-day window begins when the degree of biodegradation has reached 10% DOC and must end before Day 28 of the test. Based on the results of this test and using the classification range given in OECD-GHS and directive 67/548EEC, the ecotoxicological classification is "readily biodegradable, but failing 10 -day window".
