Description of key information

According to the read-across strategy document attached to this Chemical Safety Report (CSR), potassium allophonate quickly hydrolyses to urea in the environment. Therefore, read-across to urea is used to assess ecotoxicity. Potassium allophonate and its transformation product, urea, are of inherently low toxicity to fish species. Acute toxicity results on potassium allophonate did not indicate toxicity. Further, urea is rapidly assimilated into the nitrogen cycle by microorganisms, limiting exposure to aquatic organisms; therefore, testing of long-term toxicity to fish is scientifically unjustified.
